Sacred Water Shared Future Shanty at Art Shanty Projects 2026

Art Shanty Projects intentionally creates an impermanent art village on Minnesota lake ice amid changing climate and environment. With a spirit of embracing challenges through creativity, we support an ecosystem that inspires everyone to create and participate in art, thrive in winter, and build community.

This year, visit the Sacred Water Shared Future Shanty:

Is the Mississippi cleaner than it was 100 years ago? In 1926 the river was effectively dead — a water study found only three living fish in the region’s 50 miles of river. One hundred years later, we stand on Bdé Umáŋ to celebrate the impact of the Mississippi and the collective action and continued commitment to protect and restore. Enter our immersive river world to share what the Mississippi means to you. Populate the water with your own fish and learn more about the history of this vital waterway.

The Sacred Water Shared Future campaign is powered by you! The heart of this centennial celebration is the incredible variety of events planned and hosted by our partners — community groups, nonprofits, businesses, schools, and individuals who feel a connection to the Mississippi River.

We do not host events ourselves; instead, we serve as a central hub for river-focused activities happening across the Twin Cities throughout 2026.
