DESCRIPTION:Join local bird enthusiasts for a leisurely walk along the Mississippi Flyway as we search for migrating birds. Birds use the river corridor as a travel route during migration\, offering excellent opportunities to observe a variety of species. On this guided tour we will look and listen for migratory songbirds and waterfowl while visiting the river\, forest and marsh. Expect to walk/stroll at a relaxed pace for less than a mile on paved or gravel trails. Binoculars provided or bring your own. Program runs rain or shine unless conditions are severe. All levels of experience are welcome. $6/person.

SUMMARY:100 Rivers: Signals of Repair
DESCRIPTION:100 Rivers: Signals of Repair is an 18-month public art project that launched in Coastal Louisiana and is traveling upstream through communities along the Mississippi River as part of a watershed-wide initiative inviting reflection on our relationship to water. Installed across parks\, Main Streets\, and cultural sites\, the project places 100 semaphore signal flags within the landscape\, creating a distributed network of communication carried between body\, place\, and collective experience. The work involves a semaphore-inspired movement vocabulary performed according to a coded archive of accumulated messages reflecting with the River. \nThe September 12 iteration of 100 Rivers will be presented as part of Silverwood Park’s annual Field Trip Arts and Nature Festival. The installation will occupy the island at Silverwood\, with performances taking place from 12:00–12:30 p.m. and 2:00–2:30 p.m. Field Trip is a daylong celebration of art\, nature\, food\, and music running from 12:00–4:00 p.m. \n100 Rivers: Signals of Repair is presented in conjunction with Sacred Waters\, Shared Future and MR100\, two centennial initiatives examining how the Mississippi River’s waters\, ecology\, management\, and use have changed over the last century. Looking ahead to the next 100 years\, the project asks a simple question: What is the River saying to us today?

SUMMARY:Fall Migration on the Flyway
DESCRIPTION:Join local bird enthusiasts for a leisurely walk along the Mississippi Flyway as we search for migrating birds. Birds use the river corridor as a travel route during migration\, offering excellent opportunities to observe a variety of species. On this guided tour we will look and listen for migratory songbirds and waterfowl while visiting the river\, forest and marsh. Expect to walk/stroll at a relaxed pace for less than a mile on paved or gravel trails. Binoculars provided or bring your own. Program runs rain or shine unless conditions are severe. All levels of experience are welcome. $6/person.

Drop by anytime to spend some time in the Mississippi River catching invertebrates. You’ll learn how to identify what we catch and use a biotic index to find out how healthy our stretch of the river is. Be prepared to wade in the river. A limited number of boots are available to borrow. All ages welcome. DESCRIPTION:The 62nd Nobel Conference will take up the topic of the Mississippi River on October 6 & 7. On official maps\, the Mississippi River is merely the water that lies between two banks; however\, both cutting-edge science and ancient ways of knowing define the river as being much more expansive than that simple blue line on a page. Today\, historians and social scientists are shedding new light on the myriad of ways the Mississippi shapes human communities and power structures. \nThis conference invites us to challenge conventional definitions by considering the dynamic intersections of geological forces\, biological communities\, human cultures and ecological systems. Leading experts from multiple disciplines will explore how the watershed has evolved\, how the introduction of new fish and plant species has altered the river’s ecology\, and how climate change\, agricultural runoff\, river engineering projects\, and other human uses pose challenges to the future health of the river and those who depend on it. Indigenous perspectives will help us honor the river’s complex ecological\, social\, and spiritual contexts.

You will get to experience the accessible features at Mississippi Gateway while fishing in the Mississippi River and practicing archery. Participants under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult. Trained staff and volunteers will lead instruction and modify the program for needs. A family\, friend or PCA is encouraged to be present at the program to assist with transfers\, communication or other personal needs if necessary. $15/person.
