SUMMARY:Art + Water Workshop: Aquasonos – Community Listening with Dameun Strange
DESCRIPTION:Listening is a daily act that is both solo and collaborative: a conversation between family members over breakfast\, taking in a lesson at school\, a podcast that plays in your ears as you wait for the bus. \nWhat happens when we listen\, intentionally\, together? \nAt this evening event\, you are invited to listen together to the sounds of our watershed\, from the ancient history of Como Lake to the birds of Frogtown Farm. Sound scores by musician and composer Dameun Strange will be installed as listening environments in CRWD’s building and outdoor gardens. Tune in to three immersive works\, including a new piece composed of field recordings gathered at the previous Aquasonos workshop on April 25\, with brief remarks at 7:00 p.m. \nLearn more about the works you’ll hear at the event: Community Listening with Dameun Strange. Read an interview with Dameun about his work\, AquaSonos: An Interview with Dameun Strange. \nRegistration (see below) is appreciated but not required. Light refreshments will be served. \nNote: CRWD’s Mississippi River Room is equipped with an audio induction loop system\, Midwest Hearing Loop. This listening technology connects directly to an individual’s hearing aid via a wireless connection. SUMMARY:Oh\, How The Words Flow: A River Poem Unveiling with Andrea Jenkins
DESCRIPTION:Join the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization for a special morning celebrating the debut of a newly commissioned poem by acclaimed writer and former councilmember Andrea Jenkins. \nAs part of MWMO’s ongoing commitment to integrating art into its work\, this original piece was commissioned to reflect on the stretch of river that defines the MWMO watershed. Inspired by an earlier work by Jenkins\, the poem explores the relationship between the built environment and natural systems; how we shape the river\, and how it continues to shape us. \nGrounded in the themes of Sacred Water\, Shared Future\, the piece considers the river’s role in the region’s identity\, history\, and culture\, while acknowledging the progress made over the past century to restore its health. It invites us to reflect on a shared responsibility: how we depend on the river\, and what it takes to sustain it for generations to come. \nThe program will include remarks from MWMO leadership and partners\, followed by a live performance of the poem. \nGuests are invited to stay\, enjoy light refreshments\, and explore the building\, grounds\, and current exhibit.

SUMMARY:River Rock Art
DESCRIPTION:Let rocks inspire your art and learn about them while you’re at it. Look for rocks along the banks of the Mississippi River (you can bring your own\, too). You can use our lapidary equipment to cut rocks\, use special bits in our rotary tools to etch or carve rocks and then paint them. Turn rocks into jewelry with wire or use them as “paint” to make ephemeral art. Your imagination is the limit! $6/person.
