DESCRIPTION:Where There Is Water showcases paintings\, prints\, and drawings developed through repeated travel to Duluth\, Red Wing\, and Banning State Park near Sandstone. These locations — each shaped by different moments in Minnesota’s industrial history — are connected by rivers and lakes whose presence enabled movement\, industry\, and settlement while leaving lasting marks on the surrounding landscape. \nAcross seasons and multiple visits\, Hanlon observed\, photographed\, and created work on site. The resulting pieces reflect both the layered timelines of these places and her embodied experience of encountering them in the present moment. Familiar structures reappear throughout the exhibition: the historic lighthouse along the Lake Superior shipping canal\, boathouses along the Mississippi River in Red Wing\, and the remains of a Power House in a former sandstone quarry on the Kettle River. \nThe exhibition includes large- and medium-scale oil paintings on canvas and wood\, oil studies on Arches paper\, linocut and collagraph prints\, and a collection of colored pencil studies. Rather than document a single view\, the works speak together — holding multiple moments at once and mirroring the way places are understood through memory\, repetition\, and attentive noticing. She spans a continent and its history\, gathering sediment as well as stories. This presentation will offer highlights from the river’s journey through a series of short videos and vignettes drawn from decades of interpretive storytelling by John Shepard and Hamline University’s Center for Global Environmental Education. \nRegistration required 24 hours prior.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in the beautiful prairie at Katharine Ordway Natural History Study Area (Ordway Field Station) for an afternoon of service and snowshoeing (or hiking) fun! In partnership with Macalester College\, we need help restoring the rich prairie at the site by removing encroaching woody plants. The afternoon will include an optional naturalist-led hike by Macalester College staff to explore the prairie\, different woodland habitats\, and the river! \nThis event would be great for adults and kids over 12 years old. No experience is needed. \nParking is VERY limited at the site\, so please carpool!

SUMMARY:Where There is Water
DESCRIPTION:Where There Is Water showcases paintings\, prints\, and drawings developed through repeated travel to Duluth\, Red Wing\, and Banning State Park near Sandstone. These locations — each shaped by different moments in Minnesota’s industrial history — are connected by rivers and lakes whose presence enabled movement\, industry\, and settlement while leaving lasting marks on the surrounding landscape. \nAcross seasons and multiple visits\, Hanlon observed\, photographed\, and created work on site. The resulting pieces reflect both the layered timelines of these places and her embodied experience of encountering them in the present moment. Familiar structures reappear throughout the exhibition: the historic lighthouse along the Lake Superior shipping canal\, boathouses along the Mississippi River in Red Wing\, and the remains of a Power House in a former sandstone quarry on the Kettle River. \nThe exhibition includes large- and medium-scale oil paintings on canvas and wood\, oil studies on Arches paper\, linocut and collagraph prints\, and a collection of colored pencil studies. Rather than document a single view\, the works speak together — holding multiple moments at once and mirroring the way places are understood through memory\, repetition\, and attentive noticing. SUMMARY:Mississippi Musings: The Impact of Warming Winters
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Minnesota’s winters are warming faster than our summer months? Come learn about the impacts of warming winters on the Mississippi River and surrounding watershed. \nAt our kick-off event\, Jothsna Harris\, founder of Change Narrative\, will be both expert and storyteller at this month’s workshop. Jothsna Harris implements climate change programs that are rooted in community and centered on personal stories. \nArtist Kimberly Boustead will lead participants through a collaborative art project consisting of personalized squares depicting a healthy Mississippi River. Participants will learn simple stitches and applique to adorn their squares with botanical dyed stitching and wool elements. \nThis workshop is a collaborative effort between the MWMO; Minneapolis artist\, Kimberly Boustead; and Jothsna Harris\, founder of Change Narrative. \nThe event is free\, but registration is required.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation by Sharon Stiteler — The Birdchick \nSharon Stiteler is a local author and bird expert known online and on air as The Birdchick. She worked on the Mississippi River as a park ranger for 13 years doing bird surveys\, documenting the metro heron rookeries and eagle nests and flying over it for fall migratory bird surveys. Even when she lived in Alaska\, she found ways to connect with the river through birds. \nRegistration required 24 hours prior.
