SUMMARY:Sacred Water Shared Future Shanty at Art Shanty Projects 2026
DESCRIPTION:Art Shanty Projects intentionally creates an impermanent art village on Minnesota lake ice amid changing climate and environment. With a spirit of embracing challenges through creativity\, we support an ecosystem that inspires everyone to create and participate in art\, thrive in winter\, and build community. \nThis year\, visit the Sacred Water Shared Future Shanty: \nIs the Mississippi cleaner than it was 100 years ago? In 1926 the river was effectively dead — a water study found only three living fish in the region’s 50 miles of river. One hundred years later\, we stand on Bdé Umáŋ to celebrate the impact of the Mississippi and the collective action and continued commitment to protect and restore. Enter our immersive river world to share what the Mississippi means to you. Populate the water with your own fish and learn more about the history of this vital waterway. \nJANUARY 17 – FEBRUARY 8\, 2026\nWEEKENDS\, 10AM – 4PM\nBDé UMáŋ / LAKE HARRIET\, MPLS

SUMMARY:Big Year of Rivers Speaker Series - Freshwater Mussels in the Mississippi River: A 100 Year Roller Coaster Ride
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation by Jordan Holcomb — Malacologist with the Minnesota DNR. \nMinnesota is home to 51 native species of freshwater mussels that mostly live in rivers. This ecologically important group of filter feeding bottom dwellers experienced major declines in abundance and distribution in the last 100 years\, resulting in nearly half of Minnesota’s species to be listed as threatened or endangered at state or federal levels. Those declines are largely attributed to poor water quality\, over harvesting for commercial button and pearl industries\, invasive species\, and damming of rivers. Despite ongoing threats like Zebra Mussels\, clean water regulations and conservation efforts led by the Minnesota DNR and its partners have improved conditions in Minnesota’s rivers\, and some mussel populations appear to be on the rise. \nRegistration required 24 hours prior. \nMore Info >

SUMMARY:Where There is Water
DESCRIPTION:Where There Is Water showcases paintings\, prints\, and drawings developed through repeated travel to Duluth\, Red Wing\, and Banning State Park near Sandstone. These locations — each shaped by different moments in Minnesota’s industrial history — are connected by rivers and lakes whose presence enabled movement\, industry\, and settlement while leaving lasting marks on the surrounding landscape. \nAcross seasons and multiple visits\, Hanlon observed\, photographed\, and created work on site. The resulting pieces reflect both the layered timelines of these places and her embodied experience of encountering them in the present moment. Familiar structures reappear throughout the exhibition: the historic lighthouse along the Lake Superior shipping canal\, boathouses along the Mississippi River in Red Wing\, and the remains of a Power House in a former sandstone quarry on the Kettle River. \nThe exhibition includes large- and medium-scale oil paintings on canvas and wood\, oil studies on Arches paper\, linocut and collagraph prints\, and a collection of colored pencil studies. Rather than document a single view\, the works speak together — holding multiple moments at once and mirroring the way places are understood through memory\, repetition\, and attentive noticing. As the pilot project for the Curatorial Incubator\, Hanlon’s exhibition also includes public programs intended to bring community members into dialogue with the work and with the landscapes that shape our region. \nEVENTS\nOpening Reception: Friday\, February 13\, 6:00 – 8:00 pm \nArtist Talk: Sunday\, March 1\, 2:00 – 3:00 pm \nClosing Reception: Saturday\, March 14\, 4:00 – 6:00 pm \nGALLERY HOURS\nThursday\, Friday\, and Sunday\, 11:00 am – 6:00 pm

SUMMARY:Still Moving Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the new exhibit\, Still Moving! Meet artist Tracy Walsh\, explore her photographs and enjoy light refreshments. \nStill Moving is grounded in the understanding that water is always present even when frozen\, hidden underground\, or absorbed within living systems. In the same way\, mental and emotional states continue to shift beneath periods of stillness or pause. \nThe Mississippi River serves as both inspiration and metaphor throughout the work. Shaped by time\, impacted by collective action\, and capable of recovery\, the river reflects how care\, attention\, and stewardship can support long term resilience. \nThe exhibition is organized into four reflective sections\, PAUSE-WITHIN-CONFLUENCE-RETURN\, guiding visitors in a flow that mirrors the movement of a river and the rhythm of seasonal change.

SUMMARY:Big Year of Rivers Speaker Series - The Mississippi: Through Time and to the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation by John Sheppard — Associate Professor & Assistant Director at the Center for Global Environmental Education at Hamline University. \nIn its 90-day run from source to sea\, America’s magnificent Mississippi River transforms itself from a cheerful\, clearwater stream to a roiling\, muddy anaconda that runs 200 feet deep and floats ships from around the world. She spans a continent and its history\, gathering sediment as well as stories. This presentation will offer highlights from the river’s journey through a series of short videos and vignettes drawn from decades of interpretive storytelling by John Shepard and Hamline University’s Center for Global Environmental Education. \nRegistration required 24 hours prior.

SUMMARY:Mississippi Musings: The Impact of Warming Winters
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Minnesota’s winters are warming faster than our summer months? Come learn about the impacts of warming winters on the Mississippi River and surrounding watershed. \nAt our kick-off event\, Jothsna Harris\, founder of Change Narrative\, will be both expert and storyteller at this month’s workshop. Jothsna Harris implements climate change programs that are rooted in community and centered on personal stories. \nArtist Kimberly Boustead will lead participants through a collaborative art project consisting of personalized squares depicting a healthy Mississippi River. Participants will learn simple stitches and applique to adorn their squares with botanical dyed stitching and wool elements. \nThis workshop is a collaborative effort between the MWMO; Minneapolis artist\, Kimberly Boustead; and Jothsna Harris\, founder of Change Narrative. \nThe event is free\, but registration is required.
