SUMMARY:Spring Kickoff and Clean-Up on the Mississippi
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers needed! \nWe’re kicking off the season this year with a clean-up along the Mississippi in Minneapolis\, part of the citywide Earth Day Clean-Up on April 18th. Join us with your own kayak to help! We plan to paddle from Riverfront Park in Fridley down to Boom Island\, picking up trash from the river and along the shore as we go. We had a blast last year and also picked up SO MUCH TRASH! \nIf you don’t have a kayak\, there are opportunities to help on land too. Check the city website for more clean-up info or email us if you’d like to be part of our support crew. \nBags and gloves will be provided. RSVP required to booking@twincitieskayaking.com. Be sure to RSVP so we can arrange cooperative shuttling and carpooling for the paddlers. We hope lots more volunteers can come out and help keep our river clean! \nDon’t forget your pfd and a dry bag with extra clothes just in case of any mishaps.. water is still cold so you’ll want to stay comfortable if you accidentally get wet! In case of bad weather or river conditions\, this event will be cancelled or moved to a walking clean-up instead of paddling. \nKayak trip is approx. 5 miles. To RSVP email booking@twincitieskayaking.com

SUMMARY:Make Your Own: River Flow 'Temperature' Blanket
DESCRIPTION:Calling all knitters and crocheters! Commemorate the Big Year of Rivers by trying a new twist on a temperature blanket. SUMMARY:Presentation on the Future of the Mississippi River Gorge
DESCRIPTION:“From Rapids to Reservoirs & Back Again?’ — a presentation by John O. Anfinson\, PhD \nFor the first time since the Twin Cities’ founding\, we have an opportunity to redefine the Mississippi River in the heart of the Twin Cities. In 2014\, Congress directed the U.S Army Corps of Engineers to permanently close the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock. This ended commercial barge traffic there and at the next two locks and dams downstream: the Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam and Lock and Dam No. 1. Now the Corps wants to leave all three. \nThe Upper St. Anthony Falls Dam will remain\, as Xcel Energy owns most of it\, and removing it would destroy St. Anthony Falls. But we have a choice whether the other two locks and dams remain or come out. We face a choice between two very different worlds\, both different from the world we have known for over 100 years. John will talk about the choice before us and how we can make the best decision\, a 21st century decision. \nSpeaker bio: John O. Anfinson has been researching\, writing\, and speaking about the Mississippi River for over 40 years. He spent the first half of his 40-year federal career with the St. Paul District\, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\, as District Historian\, Tribal Coordinator\, and Cultural Resources Program Manager. He joined the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area\, a unit of the National Park Service\, in 2000 and retired as Superintendent in 2021. John is the author of The River We Have Wrought and River of History and many articles about the Mississippi River. He holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History from UMN. \nPresented by Highland District Council\, National Parks Conservation Association and St. Paul Parks Conservancy

SUMMARY:BIGGER River Journey: A Field Trip for Grown-Ups
DESCRIPTION:For 30 years\, the Big River Journey field trip has engaged children on the Mississippi River. Our flagship program takes 3rd through 5th graders out on an authentic paddleboat in the Mississippi River for an eight mile journey filled with hands-on learning opportunities. \nOnce a year\, this field trip is open to grown-ups! \nWe’ve kept some classics from the school field trip\, but also made some elegant upgrades to the experience. Step aboard the very same paddleboat\, but see it transformed to include a full Captain’s Dinner\, a free drink ticket at the onboard bar\, and brand new\, never before seen learning stations! \nThe evening will be structured like a “school day”\, including morning announcements\, lunch\, three class periods\, and recess! Of course\, there will also be breathtaking sights of the river from the outdoor decks—just like what students experience on Big River Journey. \nTickets: $100 General Pubic • $75 MPC Members • $50 Volunteers \nAll proceeds from this fundraising event will go to a good cause: keeping Mississippi Park Connection well funded so we can support the National Park Service and Mississippi River through stewardship and habitat restoration\, youth education\, and community programming.

SUMMARY:Mississippi Muse: River Geology and Wild Clay
DESCRIPTION:The Mississippi Muse series explores different aspects of the Mississippi River through a scientific and creative lens. Visualize and discover the earth’s processes that have shaped the river through this hands-on workshop. Explore the riverbed for evidence of geological history\, then unearth some “wild clay” (natural clay deposits from the earth). Learn how to process and refine this clay into something more workable\, then use it to build a simple form.
