SUMMARY:Mississippi Musings: Community & the River
DESCRIPTION:Discover how community power has shaped the Mississippi River’s past…and how it can shape its future. \nIn this session\, Colleen O’Connor Toberman\, Director of Land Use & Planning at Friends of the Mississippi River\, will trace inspiring stories of people who have helped heal the river through collective action. She’ll reveal how community organizing becomes a force for real environmental change\, breaking down the practical “levers” of power that individuals and groups can pull to advance their goals. \nAttendees will gain a systems-level view of activism—what Colleen calls the “science of community”—offering a clear\, compelling framework for understanding how movements grow\, how decisions are influenced\, and how you can plug in to make a meaningful difference. \nDrawing on her leadership as an artist\, organizer\, and volunteer\, Shanai Matteson will connect the importance of climate justice\, community storytelling\, and fostering meaningful connections to strong and resilient communities. \nArtist Kimberly Boustead will lead an art-making activity centered around the idea of what a healthy river looks like to you. \nThis event includes light refreshments and an opportunity to explore the Stormwater Park + Learning Center including A Gathering of Waters\, a multi-sensory exhibit by artist Shoshana Fink. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required.

SUMMARY:The Big Sit: A Birding Celebration at Mni Owe Sni
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to settle in\, look closely\, and become part of a global effort to capture a living snapshot of the world’s bird populations at Mni Owe Sni (Coldwater Spring). Whether you’re an experienced birder or simply curious\, this laid‑back community event turns simple observation into meaningful science. \nOverview\nFrom sunrise to sundown\, rangers and volunteers will be stationed in the accessible parking area\, ready to help you spot and identify the birds seen at Coldwater Spring. Native sparrows hop through the grasses\, thrushes move quietly among the trees\, and bluebirds flash their color in the early light—each one contributing a vital piece of information about how birds use this landscape. \nEnjoy ranger-led birding walks\, borrow binoculars (limited supply)\, and catch a live raptor presentation from the University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center. Junior Rangers can also complete hands-on activities at the event to earn their Junior Ranger badge\, making this a great family-friendly day outdoors. \nEvery bird you observe and report adds to a better understanding of bird populations and strengthens our stewardship of Coldwater Spring. Come for a few minutes or stay the whole day—your presence helps tell the story of this place. \nWhile registration is not required (except for guided birding walks)\, registered attendees receive event updates including cancellations. \nDrop-in Activites\nBird Observations with the National Park Service | 7:30 am – 6:30 pm \nStaff from the natural resources team will guide data collection\, and no experience is needed to participate. \nJunior Rangers Activities with the National Park Service | 8:30 am – 2:30 pm \nExplore\, learn\, protect: earn your Junior Ranger badge at our Junior Ranger station while you have fun learning about birds and how the Mississippi River creates the country’s biggest highway in the sky: the Mississippi Flyway! \nScheduled Activities\nGuided Birding Walks with the National Park Service (Registration and tour times are coming soon!) \nRanger-led birding walks will offer easy introductions to birding basics. Space is limited\, and limited number of binoculars will be available for registered participants\, and we encourage sharing\, Last-minute walk‑ups are welcome when space opens. \nRaptor Viewing with the University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center | 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nThe University of Minnesota Raptor Center works to ensure the health of raptors and the world we share. Their clinic takes in over a thousand injured birds every year for treatment\, while their education ambassador birds travel all across Minnesota to help inform the public about the importance of raptors to our environment. They will be bringing live birds to show on the glove as they talk about what makes these raptors unique and vital parts of our ecosystem. \nGuided Hike with the National Park Service | 1:30 – 2:30 pm \nMni Owe Sni is rich with cultural history in addition to its natural landscape. Learn about the area’s cultural significance and its designation as a traditional cultural place in the National Register of Historic Places on this ranger-led hike.

SUMMARY:The Nobel Conference — The Mighty Mississippi
DESCRIPTION:The 62nd Nobel Conference will take up the topic of the Mississippi River on October 6 & 7. On official maps\, the Mississippi River is merely the water that lies between two banks; however\, both cutting-edge science and ancient ways of knowing define the river as being much more expansive than that simple blue line on a page. Today\, historians and social scientists are shedding new light on the myriad of ways the Mississippi shapes human communities and power structures. \nThis conference invites us to challenge conventional definitions by considering the dynamic intersections of geological forces\, biological communities\, human cultures and ecological systems. Leading experts from multiple disciplines will explore how the watershed has evolved\, how the introduction of new fish and plant species has altered the river’s ecology\, and how climate change\, agricultural runoff\, river engineering projects\, and other human uses pose challenges to the future health of the river and those who depend on it. Indigenous perspectives will help us honor the river’s complex ecological\, social\, and spiritual contexts.
