SUMMARY:The Big Sit: A Birding Celebration at Mni Owe Sni
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to settle in\, look closely\, and become part of a global effort to capture a living snapshot of the world’s bird populations at Mni Owe Sni (Coldwater Spring). Whether you’re an experienced birder or simply curious\, this laid‑back community event turns simple observation into meaningful science. \nOverview\nFrom sunrise to sundown\, rangers and volunteers will be stationed in the accessible parking area\, ready to help you spot and identify the birds seen at Coldwater Spring. Native sparrows hop through the grasses\, thrushes move quietly among the trees\, and bluebirds flash their color in the early light—each one contributing a vital piece of information about how birds use this landscape. \nEnjoy ranger-led birding walks\, borrow binoculars (limited supply)\, and catch a live raptor presentation from the University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center. Junior Rangers can also complete hands-on activities at the event to earn their Junior Ranger badge\, making this a great family-friendly day outdoors. \nEvery bird you observe and report adds to a better understanding of bird populations and strengthens our stewardship of Coldwater Spring. Come for a few minutes or stay the whole day—your presence helps tell the story of this place. \nWhile registration is not required (except for guided birding walks)\, registered attendees receive event updates including cancellations. \nDrop-in Activites\nBird Observations with the National Park Service | 7:30 am – 6:30 pm \nStaff from the natural resources team will guide data collection\, and no experience is needed to participate. \nJunior Rangers Activities with the National Park Service | 8:30 am – 2:30 pm \nExplore\, learn\, protect: earn your Junior Ranger badge at our Junior Ranger station while you have fun learning about birds and how the Mississippi River creates the country’s biggest highway in the sky: the Mississippi Flyway! \nScheduled Activities\nGuided Birding Walks with the National Park Service (Registration and tour times are coming soon!) \nRanger-led birding walks will offer easy introductions to birding basics. Space is limited\, and limited number of binoculars will be available for registered participants\, and we encourage sharing\, Last-minute walk‑ups are welcome when space opens. \nRaptor Viewing with the University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center | 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nThe University of Minnesota Raptor Center works to ensure the health of raptors and the world we share. Their clinic takes in over a thousand injured birds every year for treatment\, while their education ambassador birds travel all across Minnesota to help inform the public about the importance of raptors to our environment. They will be bringing live birds to show on the glove as they talk about what makes these raptors unique and vital parts of our ecosystem. \nGuided Hike with the National Park Service | 1:30 – 2:30 pm \nMni Owe Sni is rich with cultural history in addition to its natural landscape. Learn about the area’s cultural significance and its designation as a traditional cultural place in the National Register of Historic Places on this ranger-led hike.

In collaboration with the City of Saint Paul\, we will be planting climate-adapted trees and shrubs to fill the gaps\, create habitat\, and grow a more resilient canopy in our floodplain forest. No experience required! We will give you a tree planting demonstration at the beginning of the event. This event is great for adults and kids over 12 years old. Please join us on October 9th\, October 17th\, or November 7th. \nWhat to Expect:\nTree plantings \nBasic tree/shrub ID skills \nCommunity project to help grow a more resilient urban tree canopy \nWhat to Bring:\nA full water bottle (there are no water fountains\, but we will have extra water) \nA light snack \nSturdy\, closed-toed shoes that you are okay with getting dirty/muddy \nWeather-appropriate clothing to get wet/muddy (long pants\, long-sleeved shirts\, layers\, etc.) \nWe will have all the tools you will need\, including work gloves and a first-aid kit There is a port-a-potty in the parking lot\, otherwise\, there is a Speedway gas station less than a mile away \nImportant Information:\nOur planting site for the day is roughly a half-mile/10-minute walk from the parking lot on relatively flat gravel and dirt paths that will be muddy and uneven. SUMMARY:Healing Water Garden Opening Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the opening of a unique healing space supporting the health of both the Lake Street community and the Mississippi River. \nDiscover a unique garden tucked right into Lake Street. Its terraced water feature captures and cleans onsite stormwater\, then reuses it to nourish native plants that support pollinators and wildlife. Flowing water\, small waterfalls\, and inviting seating areas create a calming space shown to reduce stress and support wellbeing—an oasis within Minneapolis’ South Side Green Zone. \nStop by to meet the team behind the project\, explore native plants\, and enjoy a live reading of a Mississippi River–themed poem by world‑renowned poet and former Minneapolis Council Member Andrea Jenkins. \nComplimentary refreshments will be provided. \nProgram begins at 4:15pm

SUMMARY:The Nobel Conference — The Mighty Mississippi
DESCRIPTION:The 62nd Nobel Conference will take up the topic of the Mississippi River on October 6 & 7. On official maps\, the Mississippi River is merely the water that lies between two banks; however\, both cutting-edge science and ancient ways of knowing define the river as being much more expansive than that simple blue line on a page. Today\, historians and social scientists are shedding new light on the myriad of ways the Mississippi shapes human communities and power structures. \nThis conference invites us to challenge conventional definitions by considering the dynamic intersections of geological forces\, biological communities\, human cultures and ecological systems. Leading experts from multiple disciplines will explore how the watershed has evolved\, how the introduction of new fish and plant species has altered the river’s ecology\, and how climate change\, agricultural runoff\, river engineering projects\, and other human uses pose challenges to the future health of the river and those who depend on it. Indigenous perspectives will help us honor the river’s complex ecological\, social\, and spiritual contexts.

SUMMARY:100 Rivers: Signals of Repair
DESCRIPTION:100 Rivers: Signals of Repair is an 18-month public art project that launched in Coastal Louisiana and is traveling upstream through communities along the Mississippi River as part of a watershed-wide initiative inviting reflection on our relationship to water. Installed across parks\, Main Streets\, and cultural sites\, the project places 100 semaphore signal flags within the landscape\, creating a distributed network of communication carried between body\, place\, and collective experience. The work involves a semaphore-inspired movement vocabulary performed according to a coded archive of accumulated messages reflecting with the River. \nThe September 12 iteration of 100 Rivers will be presented as part of Silverwood Park’s annual Field Trip Arts and Nature Festival. The installation will occupy the island at Silverwood\, with performances taking place from 12:00–12:30 p.m. and 2:00–2:30 p.m. Field Trip is a daylong celebration of art\, nature\, food\, and music running from 12:00–4:00 p.m. \n100 Rivers: Signals of Repair is presented in conjunction with Sacred Waters\, Shared Future and MR100\, two centennial initiatives examining how the Mississippi River’s waters\, ecology\, management\, and use have changed over the last century. Looking ahead to the next 100 years\, the project asks a simple question: What is the River saying to us today?

Birds use the river corridor as a travel route during migration\, offering excellent opportunities to observe a variety of species. On this guided tour we will look and listen for migratory songbirds and waterfowl while visiting the river\, forest and marsh. Expect to walk/stroll at a relaxed pace for less than a mile on paved or gravel trails. Binoculars provided or bring your own. Program runs rain or shine unless conditions are severe. All levels of experience are welcome. $6/person.
