Volunteers restoring native vegetation by the Mississippi River.

Welcome to the movement! Sacred Water Shared Future centennial is a year-long campaign powered by the people, communities, and organizations that care deeply about the Mississippi River. We are not hosting events ourselves; instead, we are building a platform to amplify your events.

Host/Register an Event

We welcome local organizations to host a variety of river-focused events, activities, programs, and more throughout 2026. Build your event around one of our core themes:

1. Honoring the River’s History:

Acknowledge the Mississippi River’s deep history, including its significance, strength, and past harms. This may resonate with people and organizations that understand the importance of historical context and the need to address past injustices.

  • Examples: A historical walking tour, a storytelling night with local elders, a film screening, or an exhibit about the river’s history.

2. Focusing on Community and Collaboration:

Celebrate community power, storytelling, education, and conservation through collaborative action. This may appeal to organizations that value partnership, engagement, and shared responsibility in river protection.

  • Examples: A community-wide river cleanup, a guided canoe flotilla, a riverside festival, a collaborative public art project, or a family fishing day.

3. Committing to a Healthy River:

Embrace a collective commitment to a healthy river, focusing on connections, responsibilities, and care. This may resonate with organizations whose core mission is environmental stewardship and advocacy for a healthy river ecosystem.

  • Examples: An educational workshop on clean water, planting a native shoreline or rain garden, a forum on the future of our waters, or a community restoration or water quality testing day.

How to Register Your Event

  1. Plan a river-focused event.
  2. Fill out our submission form with event details, including the date, time, location, and a brief description.

Share Your River Story

Everyone has a voice and a story.  Share yours today!

Sacred Water Shared Future would like to hear your story about what the Mississippi River means to you. Please take a few minutes to share your story with MN StoryCollective.

Stories are collected anonymously and will be shared with Sacred Water Shared Future partners and other agencies and teams at the State of Minnesota. MN StoryCollective is a way for you to share your experiences, generate ideas for change, and help support the state’s many communities. Your story can help shape the future of water policy and programming in Minnesota!

MN StoryCollective is an initiative that invites individuals and communities to share their stories and what these experiences mean to them. Your story will be a part of a collection of stories across the state, and the community will be involved in making meaning out of these stories to move new ideas forward for programs and services that impact the day-to-day lives of Minnesotans. Your ideas are at the core of this initiative and make positive change possible.
