National Mississippi River Day

Every June 2, communities across the country come together to celebrate National Mississippi River Day—a day to honor, protect, and connect with the lifeblood of our nation. Stretching more than 2,300 miles and touching 32 states, the Mississippi River sustains over 20 million people with drinking water, fuels local economies, and nurtures countless species of birds, fish, and wildlife. It’s more than a River—it’s a shared story, flowing through our histories, communities, and futures.
National Mississippi River Day shines a spotlight on both the beauty and the challenges of this iconic waterway. From local proclamations and festivals to online events and paddles, it’s a day for everyone—residents, leaders, and organizations alike—to come together in common purpose. The celebration also kicks off River Days of Action (June 1–15), a two-week series of events and opportunities to take action for a healthier, more resilient Mississippi River.
As One Mississippi plans for National Mississippi River Day, June 2, 2026, we’re proud to continue growing this national movement as a partner of Sacred Waters, Shared Future. More events and opportunities coming soon; for now, learn more about National Mississippi River Day here and find ways to participate and help continue to grow this new annual tradition for the River!

The Sacred Water Shared Future campaign is powered by you! The heart of this centennial celebration is the incredible variety of events planned and hosted by our partners — community groups, nonprofits, businesses, schools, and individuals who feel a connection to the Mississippi River.
We do not host events ourselves; instead, we serve as a central hub for river-focused activities happening across the Twin Cities throughout 2026.
