Sacred Water Shared Future Shanty at Art Shanty Projects 2026
Visit the Sacred Water Shared Future Shanty! Art Shanty Projects intentionally creates an impermanent art village on Minnesota lake ice amid changing climate and environment. With a spirit of embracing challenges through creativity, we support an ecosystem that inspires everyone to create and participate in art, thrive in winter, and build community.
Willow Weaving Art Making
Come join us for a community engaged art installation project led by Stephanie Lindquist, North Mississippi Regional Park’s artist in residence. On Sat., Jan. 17 and 31, learn how to weave the willow into stars and fish that will be installed in the prairie as a sea of stars and a river of fish. No experience needed!
Nature in Focus: The Dynamic Mississippi
The Mississippi River is constantly changing and being changed. Dive into hands-on discovery with a model river to see how rivers shape the landscape around them. Then learn how interventions to manage erosion and navigation have affected the river’s dynamics and wildlife in the metro area and beyond. Registration Required Ages 18+

Big Year of Rivers Speaker Series – Freshwater Mussels in the Mississippi River: A 100 Year Roller Coaster Ride
Minnesota is home to 51 native species of freshwater mussels that mostly live in rivers. This ecologically important group of filter feeding bottom dwellers experienced major declines in abundance and distribution in the last 100 years, resulting in nearly half of Minnesota’s species to be listed as threatened or endangered at state or federal levels. Join us for a presentation by Jordan Holcomb — Malacologist with the Minnesota DNR.
The Sacred Water Shared Future campaign is powered by you! The heart of this centennial celebration is the incredible variety of events planned and hosted by our partners — community groups, nonprofits, businesses, schools, and individuals who feel a connection to the Mississippi River.
We do not host events ourselves; instead, we serve as a central hub for river-focused activities happening across the Twin Cities throughout 2026.
